Ice Cream Fun!

For the “Buwan ng Lahing Filipino” the grade 1 students read the story, “Si Langgam at si Tipaklong”. The kids practiced a lot two weeks before the event. To reward them for a job well done, the kids were given ice cream.

The flavors, cheese and cookies and cream, were voted on by everyone. After recess, the Maya class joined the Pagala class in room 204 for the ice cream. After eating, the children were given the chance to enjoy the sunny afternoon weather. Everyone had fun!

Good job Maya and Pagala kids! :)

What’s in the BOX?!?

Q: What is one thing that the Maya kids absolutely look forward to every Monday?
A: The class Mystery Box!

Why are the kids so excited about this box?

1. The children take turns in bringing the box home on a Friday and putting a”mystery object” in it. It could be a toy, a food item.. it could be anything that fits in the box! The harder to guess, the better.

2. They get to write 5 descriptive sentences about the object as clues.

3. On Monday, the child with the Mystery Box gets to stand in front and make the class guess what’s in the box. (The children may touch, smell, or taste depending on the object.)

4. Each child gets 3 chances at guessing and the children with the correct guess gets a prize!

The Mystery Box isn’t just a fun guessing game. It helps the children practice sentence construction, creative thinking and use of senses; plus they also learn self-discipline (got to keep that object a secret!), taking turns and sportsmanship.

Parent Ed Seminar: The Whole Child Approach

Nest’s philosophy is to develop the whole child. What does this mean? A child has several domains of development — cognitive, physical, creative, socio-emotional, language. One domain is as important as the others. How does this match with the constant pressure of society of giving the cognitive domain the only importance?

Teacher Yangky Agustin, professor at UP’s Family Life and Child Development Department, will discuss the Whole Child Approach on Saturday, September 11, 2010. Join our Preschool Parent Ed Seminar at 8:30 am to 12 noon as Preschool Supervisor Teacher Ana Yanga also discusses the preschool’s approach to reading.

NEWS ALERT: Firemen at NEST!

NEST School, Quezon City – Ten firemen from the Loyola Heights Volunteer Fire Brigade rang the doorbell of NEST School, Quezon City in order to help the children get out of their classroom to get on top of their fire truck.

The students were seen walking in line to the front gate wearing what it seemed as an excited expression. Teacher Lala, teacher of the Bluejays PM class, stated that before the children were escorted outside the classroom, the firemen even showed the kids their tools and informed them on what they should do during fire and how to prevent it.

They were also seen showing to the children how to wear a fire suit in 30 seconds. And that they even let a child try to wear the fire suit in 30 seconds.

An eye witness also reported that the children held the fire hose with the help of a fireman.

After the incident, the students were seen giving out a banner to the firemen with a “Maraming Salamat Kayo ang Bagong BAYANI” written on it.

We would like to send out our special thanks to the Loyola Heights fire fighters for their patience with the kids, for imparting knowledge and for letting the kids experience what could be one of the happiest learning experience of the school year. We salute you, our modern day heroes!

Shopping Galore @ SaveMore!

Not all things can be learned within the four walls of a classroom. Sounds like a cliché already? Then the Blue Jays children have another way of saying it: “Things can also be learned within the four walls of a… grocery store!”

As part of discussing the concepts “places in the neighbourhood” and “places we can travel to using land transportation”, the first exposure trip of the two Blue Jays preschool classes had been a great success! Through the assistance given to us by Ms. Edna, SaveMore Anonas senior supervisor, Sir Ryan, the assistant supervisor, and Ms. Julie, a customer assistant, the children enjoyed touring around SaveMore, observing very closely the different areas of a grocery store. SaveMore even welcomed us with a banner!

The August 05, 2010 trip also gave way for us to review about which food we should eat more and which should we eat less.

We saw real, live catfish!

We were even lucky to be given the chance to peek inside the “Cold Room” or the big freezer of the store which is unaccessible to regular customers.

After the tour, the children had an activity wherein they will choose a snack that they can afford with their given budget and then pay for their own grocery item to the cashier. Who says we can only learn math using paper and pencil? While in SaveMore, the children learned some simple budgeting skills and distinguished different currencies of the Philippine Peso.

SaveMore was so kind to us that they even gave us lootbags of the products they sell in their store. In return, we showed how thankful we are to SaveMore through the Thank You card we made for them.

And of course, our trip will also not be possible without the help of our loving parents who gave their time and energy to drive us to and from SaveMore. Oh, what a wonderful trip we had!

Integrating Philosophy

Our mission is to equip children with essential values needed for them to achieve successful relationships and to become creative and critical thinkers through progressive education with a developmental and interactive approach.

Our vision is for every Nest student to have a love for God, love of country, love for family, love for self and concern for the environment. Our vision is for every Nest student to achieve their ultimate potential through progressive education.

Lessons are planned to match such philosophy.  Following are lesson plan samples implemented at the Grade school Math classes.

SAMPLE 1

Topic:                   COMPREHENSION OF WHOLE NUMBERS: 1,000 through 1,000,000

Objectives:

Cognitive:

1.  Identify cardinal numbers through millions

2. Give the place value of each digit in  6 or more digit numbers

3. Read numbers through millions/billions in  symbols and in words

4. Write numbers through millions/billions  in symbols and in words

5. Write numbers through millions/billions  in expanded form

Critical/Creative:

1. Form any number with a digit in the place value specified by

teacher       (will   be done through play)

2. DRAMATIZE. (Also for affective) to answer “pretend”  questions like

“If you were a digit in a number, in which place value would  you want

to be?   Why?”; “How would you feel if you were the digit in the

lowest    place value?  In the highest place  value?“ What  would you

say to a digit who feels sad because he is in  the lowest place  value?”

EXTRA FOR FATHER’S DAY:  Make card for Daddy following the line:

Dad, if you were a digit, I would want you to be ——- in the ———

place because ———-.

Affective:

1. Recognize the importance /contribution of each digit in a

number      (no matter how small the digit is)

2. Value one’s own place /role/importance

(Strategies as to how the objectives may be met are then written)

Once upon a time, a zero was so sad because he was the smallest digit in the family. He was in the 9,900,000,000,080 family. One day, when zero was cooking, 8 said: “Why are you sad? “ “Because I am the smallest number in the family”, said zero. “Don’t be sad”, said 80, “because you are still important. If you are not in the family, it is only 990,000,000,008! If you are not in the family, the family will be lower (poorer).” “Aaaaah! So I get it, I am still important. Thank you for explaining it to me, 8!”, said zero. “Don’t mention it baby.” 

SAMPLE 2

Topic: ROUNDING OFF WHOLE NUMBERS / ESTIMATING

Objectives:

Cognitive: Round off whole numbers based on an indicated place value and highest place value (estimating)

Critical/Creative: To create a script /presentation on seeing the value of estimating properly based on practical situations (refer to Affective Objective)

Affective: Apply the concept of overestimating / underestimating in practical situations

(example, underestimating others or the ability of others,in the process overestimating oneself; estimating food for a party/gathering, etc)

(Strategies as to how the objectives may be met are written here)

A poster at school says “TALENT WEEK”. Kyle: Want to join the talent show? AJ and Nathan: No way! Kyle: 1000 pesos for whoever wins. AJ and Nathan Fine! Tracy: The boys are joining…NO TALENTS Dani: Yeah, definitely lose. During the talent show: AJ and Nathan perform. Tracy and Dani: They are good! Tracy: Can’t believe we underestimated them. Dani: Yeah. Emcee:: And the winner is… It’s a tie between AJ-Nathan and Dani!

Superfy your Sandwich!

Why make a boring sandwich when you can make it SUPER!

The Cardinals Class is here to “superfy” your usual snack with the help of their not-so-secret super powers–Cooperation, passion, and enthusiasm.

Last July 30, these powers were unleashed as the preschool classes celebrated Nutrition Month through a culminating activity. All the classes prepared a different kind of food to share to everyone.

Each of the Cardinals was assigned to a station in making the Cardinals’ Super Sandwiches:

Sophia: bread and lettuce
Gabby and Simon: ham
Elise and Ash: tomato
Tres: ketchup
Dale: cheese

They did their parts really well. Some of them even helped those who were having a hard time slicing. Upon finishing up, everyone got so excited as they saw 7 serving plates filled with the Super Sandwiches that they made! A student even remarked, “Wow! I didn’t know we could make that much Super Sandwich!” It was an awesome experience for everyone.

But the question is.. What else can the Cardinals “superfy”?
