Be Whatever You Want To Be ♥

Play involving dress up and make-believe develops a child’s perspective taking skills and provides practice of important skills for social interactions

This is what the Sparrows and Mockingbirds class love doing: Playing and pretending to be WHATEVER they want to be. Whether, it’s a princess, a rockstar or a bunny, the children let their imaginations take them on their own magical journey aboard our imagination box.

In order for them to learn dressing up on their own, the class had our very own version of the “Photobooth” where the children picked their costumes and flashed their smiles in front of the camera

The boys got  excited, stood up and posed first.

Of course, the girls followed in style.

All together now…

The children enjoyed the activity so much that they all wanted to wear the costumes even till outdoor play.

Parents can do simple things at home to encourage healthy make believe and dramatic play:

  • Limit the amount of television and video time for children
  • Provide a box of dress up clothes full of old shoes, capes (ones with Velcro closings are best), hats, aprons, purses, bags and vests
  • Hang a mirror at a child’s level near the area where children most often engage in pretend play.
  • Allow for a healthy amount of conflict and disrespectful conflict resolution in the context of make believe play (monsters who eat people, trolls who kidnap others, heroes who threaten to destroy the planet -Kelly Pfeiffer7.28.09

Word of the Day

Floc·ci·nau·ci·ni·hil·i·pil·i·fi·ca·tion – What?!

Before a regular fun-filled English class starts, Nest students will have an appetizer of new words served by themselves! Every day a student representative will share an unfamiliar word to the class, discuss its meaning , and give an original sentence using that new word. The class, at the same time, will also try to come up with their own sentences. This simple exercise surely starts to ignite the the students’ cognitive and creative skills all throughout the day.

Visit NestEnglish.multiply.com to know the latest word of the day and the creative sentences the students made out of it! ^_^

Goin’ Bananas!

To celebrate Nutrition Month the Pagala class also cooked Minatamis na Saging, aside from the pizza with chef Joel Erfe.

Under the guidance of the classroom teacher, the kids peeled and chopped bananas and measured out sugar and water. The kids put all the ingredients in the pot.

Everybody loved the sweet bananas! They certainly went back for more.

Getting Ready for a Chef’s Visit

The kids were very excited to meet our guest resource speaker, chef Joel. For English class, we prepared hand made cards as tokens of appreciation.

The kids were asked to use any art material they wished and were given the choice of paper color for their cards.

Everyone enjoyed getting creative.

Special Yum Tacos

The Grade 1 Maya kids decided to make a snack that has all the three food groups in it: TACOS! It was a week’s worth of preparation before we actually made the tacos.

Monday: Class votation (it was a tough choice between tacos and spaghetti)

Tuesday: We made a recipe poster complete with drawings of materials and procedure. The children thought of naming our recipe Special Yum Tacos

Wednesday: The children worked in pairs to sort the ingredients of tacos  (minatamis na saging and pizza) into Go, Grow and Glow foods.

Thursday: Cards for Chef Je were made by the kids as a homework. Each Maya proudly showed his/her card project to class.

Friday: The Maya kids made grated the cheese, sliced the tomatoes and lettuce and mixed the beef. Ta-da! Special Yum Tacos!

Pizza Pizzazz!

For the Grade 1 Nutrition Month culminating activity, the two classes invited Chef Joel “Je” Erfe and his friend Kuya Macky who taught the children how to make pizza from scratch.

Step 1: Roll the dough

Step 2: Flip and spin the dough (“You have to be an expert chef to do this”)

Step 3: Top with your favorite ingredients and pop it in the oven.

(our pizza had pineapples, mushrooms, ham and cheese!)

Step 4: All you hungry Grade 1 (and teachers and Kuya Macky and Chef Je) come and eat it up!

What a great way to cap off learning about good food and healthy living.

Visit us again Chef Je and Kuya Macky!

2010 World Cup Fever Not yet Over?!?

Think 2010 FIFA World Cup fever already over? Well, not yet in the Blue Jays AM Class!

Over the past weeks, the Blue Jays AM children continually love to kick our big ball around the playground during Outdoor Play. They play on teams, sometimes using the “Boys Team” versus the “Girls Team”, and they play individually, competing on who’s going to kick the ball into the goal and who’s going to prevent it from entering into the goal.

The children were so resourceful that they use one corner of the school (beside the door entering the Nest office) to serve as their goal. But to make their soccer play more interesting, we made them their own mini goal that they can use anytime and anywhere in the playground.

This wasn’t a planned activity for the Blue Jays AM. Teachers just need to be observant of the students’ spontaneous actions and we could already make great activities for them to do! This soccer play with a definite goal is one way for the children to enhance their gross motor skills, eye-foot coordination and muscle control.
